Wearing Every Hat
This event was particularly meaningful to me because I had the opportunity to take on several roles throughout the process.
Bringing “Building Connections That Open Doors” together meant taking on several roles throughout the process: Event Planner, Project Manager, Coordinator, and, for the first time, Panel Moderator. As President of Seneca Design Innovators, that meant coordinating with our speakers and the team, planning the event flow, managing logistics, and making sure everything came together on the day, long before the panel itself ever started.
A New Kind of Preparation
Stepping in front of the room and guiding a conversation with four accomplished professionals was both exciting and a little outside my comfort zone.
Moderating pushed me to think differently about preparation. It wasn't just about writing questions in advance — it was about understanding the speakers themselves: knowing when to follow a thread, when to move the conversation forward, and when to simply let a good answer breathe. That kind of real-time judgment is something no run-of-show document can fully prepare you for.
Why It Was Worth It
Events like this are never the work of one person; they come together through the effort, creativity, and collaboration of an entire team.
What made the experience especially rewarding was watching the conversation develop organically, as four speakers with different experiences and perspectives gave students a real chance to ask questions and learn from their journeys in the industry. None of it would have happened without the Seneca Design Innovators team trusting me to lead the event, or everyone working behind the scenes to pull it together. This experience taught me a lot about event production, leadership, and facilitating meaningful conversations, and reminded me why creating opportunities for students to connect with industry professionals matters so much.
